History of Cedar Lake Summerfest

The Cedar Lake Summerfest began in 1981, thanks to the vision of Florence Wahlberg, Eileen Hunley, Sue Summers, Karen Dowler, and Mary Joan Dickson. Inspired by a growing trend of community festivals, these women aimed to bring people together to celebrate Cedar Lake, rekindle fond memories, and create new ones. Partnering with the Park Board, their inaugural event was a Town-Wide Picnic featuring a local band, food vendors offering treats like Elephant Ears and BBQ sandwiches, and games for all ages. A softball tournament with teams from the Fire Department, Police Department, Town Hall, and Public Works added to the fun.

By the second year, the Fraternal Order of Police joined in, expanding the festival with children’s rides, a beer garden, fireworks, and additional food booths. In 1983, the Cedar Lake Summerfest Committee was officially formed to oversee the event, with the Town Manager initially serving as Chairman. Over time, the committee transitioned to a group of dedicated citizens committed to celebrating their community. By 1986, the Town Manager took on the role of Liaison, and a formal resolution ensured collaboration between the Committee and Town Council to continue this beloved event.
Today, Cedar Lake Summerfest Inc. operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, run entirely by volunteers. The festival’s operating budget relies on parking fees, vendor fees, and generous support from donors and sponsors, including businesses, organizations, and families. Without these contributors and volunteers, the festival would not be possible.
Over the years, Summerfest has featured unique activities like Water Ball, Bucket Brigade, Mud Wrestling, Helicopter Rides, Bus Tours, and Boat Rides. The committee works tirelessly each year to introduce new events and programs. The festival mascot, Boom, has been a cherished part of the celebration for many years.

Held annually on the shores of the scenic 800-acre Cedar Lake at Lake of the Red Cedars Park, the festival offers something for everyone. Admission is free, though there is a $10 donation for parking.
